The interface is getting crowded, I'd agree. I don't neccessarily think that the site is too complicated - but I sometimes feel that the top pages are too packed with content. I love all the features and the graphic flavor of the site, but I think on a page-by-page basis the site could be simplified without sacrificing content or features.
However, I do like the approach the site takes when you're logged out. Hide everything complicated and just show news. Much like flickr, it's easy just to browse the site's content, but the interface gets a bit more complicated once you login.
My main concern with the interface is that index pages have around 50+ articles linked from them at the moment, and that can sometimes be overwhelming even to someone who is used to the site like myself.
I would say you gave the site a fair review. I look forward to your thoughts on magnolia.
